When Life Gives You Second Chances

If you were diagnosed with a terminal condition today…
How would you respond?
Do you quit your 9–5 and go travel the world?
Would you finally ask out that girl you’ve been dreaming about?
Faced with our mortality…
Most of us would certainly make major changes to our way of life.
This is a sign.
It means that your current state isn’t up to your given potential.
And each breath is a second chance to restart.

A few years ago, I met a woman abroad who had sold all of her belongings and started a new life at 30.
Her plan was to spend the next three months hiking through Argentina and Chile out of a backpack.
Why?
Just two months earlier, she was involved in a car wreck while commuting to her corporate job on the East Coast.
It was now or never for her.
I was inspired…
But sadly — it didn’t cure my fear of the unknown.
So after a pleasant vacation, I returned back home intending to climb the ladder as planned.
Just like the rest of my friends.
Over the next few years…
You do what’s expected.
You drown any inclination of a meaningful life in distraction.
World news, compulsive iPhone use, the latest music, Reddit debates, fast food, celebrity drama, movies, excessive planning, new hoodies…
This continues indefinitely.
Until you’re given a second chance of your own.

One evening I found myself infected by a particularly potent variant of the coronavirus.
But in my mid 20s — I thought I was invincible.
So as I stubbornly walk downstairs to watch Hulu on the big screen…
I lose my vision and suddenly pass out.
Tumbling down a flight of stairs in the process.
It was a wake up call.
I decided to start taking control of my life.
Still a question remained…
How?

“The truly free individual is free only to the extent of his own self-mastery” — Steven Pressfield
Hard truth…
The rationalizations you’ve developed against your dream life are lies.
They are simply self-imposed limiting beliefs that keep you comfortable with complacency.
Stop it.
Once you accept the process of self-mastery…
The impossible becomes reality.
Dating isn’t “fair” because you haven’t TURNED yourself into the man she actually wants.
Work is “hard” because you’re not focused on the right mission.
Once you destroy your old ways of being…
You earn every time you breathe.

In order to wake up into the life you were intended to live…
- Cut the distractions
- Ignore what everyone else is preoccupied with
- Start acting
Olympians don’t behave like pencil pushers.
Why?
Because you can’t do the extraordinary with ordinary methods.
Be obsessed.
Dedicate your time to mastery even after the race is over.
If doubts and distractions attempt to seduce you back into bed…
Tell them “f*ck off” and go create your destiny.
